How to properly administer an asthma inhaler: perfect your inhaler technique

Once you’ve been prescribed an inhaler for your asthma, it is important that you know how to use it properly! Failure to do so greatly reduces their benefit, as well as increases your risk of side effects.

Here are some steps to make sure you’re getting the most out of your asthma inhaler:

  1. Shake the inhaler well
  2. Remove the cap
  3. Exhale
  4. Place the inhaler between your teeth and close your lips around it
  5. Slowly begin to inhale
  6. Press the top of your inhaler once, continue slowly inhaling until you have taken a full breath
  7. Remove the inhaler from your mouth, but continue to hold your breath for 10 seconds
  8. Exhale

If this first puff was insufficient and you need a second one, just repeat the steps above. These steps can be used with any asthma inhalers, unless otherwise directed by your pharmacist, doctor, or the patient information leaflet included with your inhaler.

It is reported that up to one third of asthma patients users are using their incorrectly. Meaning that up to one third of asthma sufferers aren’t getting the full benefits of their inhalers! Make sure to use the proper inhaler technique to ensure that you are getting the full benefits of your inhaler.
